Baylor College of Medicine HGSC Renews Risk Management Contract with TalaTek

TYSON’S CORNER, Va., May 14, 2019 – Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center (BCM-HGSC) has renewed its annual risk management contract with TalaTek, an integrated risk management firm. TalaTek is helping BCM-HGSC to address, meet, document and uphold the regulatory compliance standards set by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute that are in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-53.

As part of its contract, TalaTek is responsible for continuous monitoring, and identifying the latest cyberthreats as well as recommending appropriate remediation. Using NIST guidelines, TalaTek performs ongoing monthly and ad-hoc scans to determine the vulnerabilities in the HGSC system boundary, analyze scan results and provide trend analysis and executive reports, while interfacing with HGSC’s network and security teams to regularly review scan findings.

“In today’s high-risk environment, higher education organizations like Baylor need to be especially proactive in their approach to cybersecurity,” said Baan Alsinawi, president and founder of TalaTak. “Baylor knows the best way to protect their data is to be smart about their security position, starting with an annual risk assessment that lets them understand where their data is, the value of their data and how to best protect it.”

BCM-HGSC is located in Houston, Texas and focuses on high-throughput DNA sequence generation and the accompanying analysis. The center currently operates multiple sequencing platforms (Illumina, Pacific Biosciences, Oxford Nanopore, and Sanger)in which the sequence data generated is analyzed in a complex bioinformatics pipeline, and the data is deposited regularly in the public databases at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) or cloud partners for secure data sharing – ensuring the worldwide research community has timely access to the data.
